DSLR 101: Canon Rebel Plus

Our DSLR 101: Canon Rebel Plus course is an essential first step to learning how to get the very best results with your DSLR camera. This course is all about gaining familiarity with the key features of the camera that you'll use every day.

Our primary goal in this course is to quickly graduate from the cameras AUTO mode. We'll show you how to use shooting modes specific to everyday shooting scenarios such as sports, portraiture and landscape.

Most importantly, we'll show you how to take control of your camera so that you'll be able to achieve great results even in challenging light or when your subject is moving quickly. You'll also learn how to take control of your cameras focus system to ensure that your subject is always clear and sharp.

In the second half of the course, you will put into practice all the concepts learned to overcome problems you encounter when shooting common photographic scenarios. Focus will be on getting the best results for portraits by fine tuning brightness, colour and using fill flash, photographing subjects in motion by taking control of the focus modes, and making use of ambient light in low light scenarios while stabilizing your camera.

Course Outline:

- Essential everyday camera controls
- Using camera presets for specific shooting scenarios
- Taking control of focus for clear and sharp photos
- Photographing subjects in motion successfully
- How to overcome challenging lighting scenarios
- Understanding when to use (and not to use) flash
- Getting proper colour in your photos
- Choosing the right lens for the shot

Please note that while the course is 5hrs long, a lunch break of 30 to 60 min will happen half way through the course.

  • Great Starting Point!!

  • November 10, 2012

I took this class wanting to become comfortable with the settings on my camera, as well as hoping for some photography info on how the different settings can affect (and hopefully improve) my photos. This workshop was a fantastic starting point! It covered how to access the settings on my camera as well as when certain things should be adjusted. Things like choosing a focal point, ISO adjustments, exposure compensation, white balance settings, and flash use are no longer a guessing game for me. Our class was small - only 4 of us - and our instructor was great. We had lots of questions, both about how to access and control setting on our cameras as well as how to resolve certain issues we encounter in taking photos. He answered everything, even giving basic answers to questions that really involved subjects covered in the DSLR 201 course such as shutter speed. He also had no problem answering our queries about gear basics like filters and lens hoods. The 2 extra hours used for putting to practical use the things discussed was well worth it. We did exercises outside and inside trying the different settings and seeing the difference it made in our photos in certain situations. I would definitely recommend doing the "Plus" to get this hands on practice with the instructor. This class was well worthwhile as I feel like I got a great intro on a whole range of subjects!! I am now very comfortable leaving the "green box" auto setting on my camera, and don't plan on going back to it. My experience was great and I certainly plan on doing the DSLR 201.
