  • Great learning tool

I got my camera last summer and have been taking 1000's of pictures with it. Thinking I was an average photographer, I was going nuts and just snapping anything in sight. Well I thought I knew how to use the camera but after taking the course today I found out I knew very little about my camera. Mark, our instructor, was very informative, and made the 3 hour course go by real fast. He was very interesting, informed and had many great analogies to help us understand what he was talking about. I strongly suggest people to take this course if you want to learn how to really use your camera.

I've had my D90 for about a year, thinking that reading online guides or going through the manual in detail would help me learn and understand how to use this camera to its full potential -I was wrong. I'm glad that I finally decided to attend this course because what I couldn't figure out for a year, the instructor, taught in a few hours. He went through how and when to use the different settings, and made sure that we were able to follow along on our cameras. I recommend this course to anyone who has an interest in photography and doesn't necessarily know all the terms that photographers use. Because not only do I now know how to use my D90, I now also understand how to apply the things I learned when using and shopping for other cameras and accessories! I also attended the DSLR 201: Nikon cameras course and it is an excellent follow-up to this 101 course. However, between the two, I'd have to say that this course made the bigger difference. Point of the story: take this course if you have a big camera and don't really know what all the buttons do. Put the money you spent on the camera to good use!

  • Absolute Must For Beginners

I would highly recommend this course for anyone coming from a compact camera point and click world or anyone who has not gone beyond using the Scene mode on their camera. This course starts with a tour of the most used features required to take and view photos in the Automatic and Scene modes and finishes with taking photos in the Program mode (semi-manual) to correct photos which are too bright/dark or where the colour is not right. The Program mode section of the course covers ISO, Exposure Compensation, White Balance, and when to use your flash. The instructor is a professional photographer with many years of experience. He did an excellent job of presenting the course material including aiding students during the hand-on exercises. The course notes were well-ordered and presented concepts clearly. My only criticism would be that these notes include a few more example slides or a summary slide on AF-Area Modes versus AF Modes. The notes are available for download in PDF format and I have reviewed them several times since taking the course and find them to be invaluable. I'm looking forward to taking the next course in the series. Course Date: May 22, 2011 Instructor: Rob

  • Nikon D90 - PART 1

Date: April 15, 2011 Instructor: Martin I found the class very informative. I've been doing photography since I was young and last August I upgraded to the D90. So I've had experience with it for a bit, but this class taught what/where each function/button was, but more important we learned WHERE, WHEN and WHY we would use them. I would highly recommend this to both beginners and avid photographers. I look fwd to taking Part 2. Thank you Martin for a great class, 3 hours well spent!

  • Great course

Instructor: Kylie Attended: March 2011 Level of knowledge going into course: Moderate (read the manual, previous experience with advanced features of a point and shoot, novice SLR knowledge) I really enjoyed this course and found that my 3 hours were well spent. The course is a great refresher for someone who has been out of photography for a while as well as someone new to the Nikon feature set. This course not only taught me how to use each feature on the camera (as an instruction manual could do), it taught me WHY each function should be used and WHEN to use it. It demonstrated what the effects would look like through presentation examples as well as in class participation. Highly recommended.

  • Good Introductory Course

We had Tim Olett as the instructor for this course. I particular found the course was useful because it provided a good review of what all the buttons on our camera do. A good way to prepare yourself is to be familiar with your camera and at least read the user manual. Tim is a very knowledgeable person with a wealth of experience to back him up. He delivered an interesting and interactive course, covering all topics about your camera. I enjoyed the last half of the course where Tim covered topics on Controlling Focus, Flash Fundamentals, ISO/Exposure Compensation and White Balance, which I found has more meat than the first half. Good introductory course overall!
