Our DSLR 101: Nikon D7100/D90 course is an essential first step to learning how to get the very best results with your DSLR camera. This course is all about gaining familiarity with the key features of the camera that you'll use every day. Our primary goal in this course is to quickly graduate from the cameras AUTO mode. We'll show you how to use shooting modes specific to everyday shooting scenarios such as sports, portraiture and landscape. Most importantly, we'll show you how to take control of your camera so that you'll be able to achieve great results even in challenging light or when your subject is moving quickly. You'll also learn how to take control of your cameras focus system to ensure that your subject is always clear and sharp.

This is a great basic introduction on how to use your camera and start to get yourself off of your Auto mode. Barry was a great instructor, explained everything very well and encouraged lots of questions and was there after the course for some additional help. Looking forward to taking the Nikon 201 course as well.

Took this workshop on Sunday with Barry. Great instructor. Will not use auto-focus again after this. Learned so many new little tricks and features. Highly recommend this course. Looking forward to my next workshop :)
Daniel, our teacher, packed a tremendous amount of information in what seemed a short period of time. The 3 hours flew by and thankfully there were pdf class notes available that we could download afterwards. I thought I was using my Nikon satisfactorily until I learned some other vital options available on my camera. I wish I took this course earlier. If you're starting out, or if you want to learn more about your Nikon, this class is worth every penny. Thanks Daniel for a great class yesterday! You made what would have been complicated for me to learn on my own, easy to understand!
Highly recommend this course to anyone who is looking to get more from their d90' (or 7000 :-). My instructor, David, was fantastic and had an ease in communicating the information to allow me to connect a lot of dots I had encountered along the way. My only regret is not having taken it sooner. Top ratings and thanks to Henrys for having such an excellent program.
I took this course in June 2012 at the Scarborough location after purchasing my first DSLR. The course is packed full of information and examples that allow you to focus on 1 important area of photography and your camera as not to overwhelm you. A note of thanks you to our instructed Bob who beyond a doubt has a gift for teaching. His passion, patience and knowledge of photography are truly inspiring. Great course and I highly recommend to anyone wanting to lean more about the "not so auto part" of your camera which allows you to get more creative pictures.
I got my camera last summer and have been taking 1000's of pictures with it. Thinking I was an average photographer, I was going nuts and just snapping anything in sight. Well I thought I knew how to use the camera but after taking the course today I found out I knew very little about my camera. Mark, our instructor, was very informative, and made the 3 hour course go by real fast. He was very interesting, informed and had many great analogies to help us understand what he was talking about. I strongly suggest people to take this course if you want to learn how to really use your camera.
I've had my D90 for about a year, thinking that reading online guides or going through the manual in detail would help me learn and understand how to use this camera to its full potential -I was wrong. I'm glad that I finally decided to attend this course because what I couldn't figure out for a year, the instructor, taught in a few hours. He went through how and when to use the different settings, and made sure that we were able to follow along on our cameras. I recommend this course to anyone who has an interest in photography and doesn't necessarily know all the terms that photographers use. Because not only do I now know how to use my D90, I now also understand how to apply the things I learned when using and shopping for other cameras and accessories! I also attended the DSLR 201: Nikon cameras course and it is an excellent follow-up to this 101 course. However, between the two, I'd have to say that this course made the bigger difference. Point of the story: take this course if you have a big camera and don't really know what all the buttons do. Put the money you spent on the camera to good use!
I would highly recommend this course for anyone coming from a compact camera point and click world or anyone who has not gone beyond using the Scene mode on their camera. This course starts with a tour of the most used features required to take and view photos in the Automatic and Scene modes and finishes with taking photos in the Program mode (semi-manual) to correct photos which are too bright/dark or where the colour is not right. The Program mode section of the course covers ISO, Exposure Compensation, White Balance, and when to use your flash. The instructor is a professional photographer with many years of experience. He did an excellent job of presenting the course material including aiding students during the hand-on exercises. The course notes were well-ordered and presented concepts clearly. My only criticism would be that these notes include a few more example slides or a summary slide on AF-Area Modes versus AF Modes. The notes are available for download in PDF format and I have reviewed them several times since taking the course and find them to be invaluable. I'm looking forward to taking the next course in the series. Course Date: May 22, 2011 Instructor: Rob
Date: April 15, 2011 Instructor: Martin I found the class very informative. I've been doing photography since I was young and last August I upgraded to the D90. So I've had experience with it for a bit, but this class taught what/where each function/button was, but more important we learned WHERE, WHEN and WHY we would use them. I would highly recommend this to both beginners and avid photographers. I look fwd to taking Part 2. Thank you Martin for a great class, 3 hours well spent!
Instructor: Kylie Attended: March 2011 Level of knowledge going into course: Moderate (read the manual, previous experience with advanced features of a point and shoot, novice SLR knowledge) I really enjoyed this course and found that my 3 hours were well spent. The course is a great refresher for someone who has been out of photography for a while as well as someone new to the Nikon feature set. This course not only taught me how to use each feature on the camera (as an instruction manual could do), it taught me WHY each function should be used and WHEN to use it. It demonstrated what the effects would look like through presentation examples as well as in class participation. Highly recommended.
We had Tim Olett as the instructor for this course. I particular found the course was useful because it provided a good review of what all the buttons on our camera do. A good way to prepare yourself is to be familiar with your camera and at least read the user manual. Tim is a very knowledgeable person with a wealth of experience to back him up. He delivered an interesting and interactive course, covering all topics about your camera. I enjoyed the last half of the course where Tim covered topics on Controlling Focus, Flash Fundamentals, ISO/Exposure Compensation and White Balance, which I found has more meat than the first half. Good introductory course overall!
Jim Lamont obliviously knows his stuff. I liked the course except that I would love to have at least an introduction on Aperture and F-stop.
