This series of courses takes you from simple off-camera flash control to working with multiple flash units in studio or outdoor settings. You'll learn how careful controlled flash can help you coax gorgeous portraits and still lifes from spaces filled with challenging, or even no, lighting. You'll discover how through-the-lens metred flashes work, how to balance available and flash-created lighting and how to direct and shape flash to bring scenes to dramatic life. And, we'll get you comfortable with more powerful and versatile studio flashes and introduce the world of studio lighting for portraiture and still lifes. If you have a Canon or Nikon flash, we have classes designed just for you. Flash, it's just not for on top of your camera anymore.

Studio 101: Portraits

Level: Intermediate

Learning to take better portraits involves four basic objectives: understanding lighting equipment, its proper operation, lighting techniques and effective posing. In this course you'll experience portrait photography from all perspectives: the photographer's, the assistant's, the model's and the observer's. We'll build various lighting setups, beginning with one light and building up to four, showing you the different results each set up gives.
